This initiative, led by organizations such as the African Institute for Social Development (AISD), Yorkshire Mesmac, African Advocacy Foundation, and Terrence Higgins Trust, has made HIV testing more accessible to Black African communities, who are disproportionately affected by HIV in England.
By integrating HIV self-testing kits into these familiar environments, we are helping to break down barriers to testing, encourage early diagnosis, and reduce stigma surrounding HIV.
Why This Initiative Matters
According to surveillance data from the UK Health Security Agency, an estimated 1,600 people of Black African ethnicity are living with undiagnosed HIV in England, making up 34% of the estimated total of 4,700 undiagnosed cases. Despite making up less than 3% of the UK population, this community is significantly disproportionately affected, highlighting the urgent need for targeted HIV testing services.
Barbershops and hair salons have long been recognized as vital spaces within communities, serving as places where people feel comfortable discussing important issues, including health. By making HIV self-testing kits available in these locations, the campaign is fostering community-driven HIV awareness and encouraging regular HIV testing in an environment where people feel at ease.
